Comptoir Ephémère, Bordeaux le 15 février 2018.
Affiche alléchante ce soir au Comptoir Éphémère où on annonce « The Great Meeting », un retour aux années 80 où les musiciens new-yorkais jouaient de temps en temps à Bordeaux, à l’Alligator, au Chaski… Pas mal d’entre eux venaient à l’invitation de leur camarade de promotion à la Berklee Music School, le « Girondin » – mais fan de la Juve – Olivier Gatto. C’est encore lui, ce soir, qui organise ce meeting avec deux musiciens qui font partie du Jazz à Lincoln Center Orchestra dirigé par Wynton Marsalis qui était en concert la veille à l’Auditorium. Une concentration de solistes hors pair.
Entre parenthèses, il se passe de très belles choses à cet Auditorium en jazz mais dans une quasi clandestinité, les places étant chères – à tous points de vue malgré certaines à 8 € – mais surtout captées dès le début par les abonnés de l’Opéra de Bordeaux. Peu de com, pas besoin, aucun contact avec Action Jazz, pas besoin, un certain entre soi, mais ce n’est pas l’objet de cet article. Juste une anecdote, en 2016, à l’issue d’un concert de Stacey Kent avec l’ONBA, auquel par miracle j’ai pu assister, les CD partaient à la fin par deux ou trois à 25 € pièce. Ça fait rêver, ou ça donne des cauchemars à beaucoup de nos artistes locaux pourtant si méritants qui se demandent bien où est ce public les autres jours…
Malheureusement sur les deux musiciens prévus, un a dû déclarer forfait pour des raisons familiales, le tromboniste Vincent Gardner. Ce qui va donner l’occasion à notre Sébastien Iep Arruti local de briller. Prévenu à exactement 11h44 le jour même, il a relevé le défi et de très belle manière.
Par contre le trompettiste Kenny Rampton lui est bien là, on va vite s’en rendre compte. Beau pedigree, Ray Charles Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Havana All Stars de Bebo Valdez, Christian Mc Bride… Kenny connaît Bordeaux, il y a joué et tourné dans le coin voilà trente ans avec Olivier Gatto et aussi le batteur Philippe Gaubert qu’il a retrouvé hier soir.
Kenny est là comme musicien mais aussi pour présenter son association de Las Vegas « Jazz Outrich Initiative » qui développe la formation et l’éducation des jeunes autour du jazz. Vegas c’est bien loin mais pourquoi pas un tel dispositif ou une antenne ici autour de l’Afro-Boriken Jazz Association d’Olivier Gatto et Shekinah Rodz pour par exemple rajeunir le public du jazz ?
Mais revenons au concert. Pour accueillir le(s) Ricain(s) Olivier a pris des valeurs sûres car le niveau est très relevé. Au piano le doc Francis Fontès, le prof Philippe Valentine à la batterie,
la présidente (de son asso) Shekinah Rodz, aux sax alto et soprano, à la flûte, au chant et au barril bomba, et maître Frantz Fléreau aux percus.
Et donc Iep au trombone, baptisé ce soir jumping Basque par Olivier. Ce dernier annonce que les musiciens du JLCO ayant deux jours off et étant restés à Bordeaux il y aura peut-être des surprises. Ne faisons pas de suspens, il n’y en aura pas, nul besoin d’ailleurs car ça bardait drôlement au Comptoir. Pourtant le chauffeur de Wynton Marsalis avait téléphoné pour savoir où se rendre exactement…
Le Comptoir Éphémère est bien rempli – et ça fait plaisir – quand le concert débute avec « On the Ginza » . Pas de round d’observation, c’est Shekinah au sax alto qui ouvre le feu d’un chorus magistral enchaîné par Kenny.
Et là on commence tous à se regarder bouché bée : « Ah oui quand même ! » comme on dit maintenant. Quel son ! Quelle maîtrise des aigus avec une propreté exceptionnelle, quelle possibilité de proposer instantanément des nuances feutrées suivies d’explosions sonores, quelle volubilité jamais gratuite ! Pas de sourdine, pas d’effet, de la trompette, de la vraie. A Iep d’enchaîner, il n’en menait pas large me confiera t-il. Trop modeste Sébastien, c’est peut-être ton défaut car avec ce que tu nous montres et en voyant les réactions de Kenny on peut te confirmer que le niveau tu l’as, ça va s’entendre toute la soirée.
Étonnant de voir une telle formation de circonstance jouer aussi bien. Des unissons de cuivres impeccables et des dialogues mémorables.
Celui de Shekinah à la flûte avec Kenny sur « Azure » ou encore la bagarre de questions réponses sans fin entre Iep et le trompettiste, un vrai bras de fer et finalement deux vainqueurs. Rythmique de haut vol, pas de répit, un Philippe Valentine bien caché mais pas sonorement, un Francis Fontès en overdrive qui va emballer « Walkin’ » d’une accélération puissante.
Sur ce titre Kenny Rampton – il est vraiment très sympa – a invité le jeune trompettiste bordelais Loïc Guenneguez ; lui non plus n’est pas fier mais il va prendre sa chance parmi tous ces anciens ; il reconnaît qu’il reste du boulot pour arriver au niveau de son voisin mais ça va venir, tout est déjà en place.
Sur « United » au thème si amusant, les percus et le piano sont à la fête ainsi que le soprano de Shekina qui va nous offrir sa voix pour terminer avec une belle chanson d’amour « Obsesion ». Quel talent cette musicienne, comment tant de gens peuvent-ils s’en priver ? La ballade finit par basculer vers une salsa gorgée de rythme, grâce notamment à un festival de Frantz Fléreau et à la trompette enflammée de Kenny. Caliente !
Olivier Gatto, particulièrement en verve ce soir, voit sa contrebasse mise à rude épreuve l’abandonner, micro en vadrouille ; un bricolage et ça repart de plus belle. On en redemande mais il est près de minuit, l’heure où les voitures se transforment en citrouille ce qui est peu commode, notamment pour les contrebassistes m’expliquera Oivier.
On a retrouvé lors de ce concert les plus belles heures du Comptoir du Jazz, alors au lieu d’aller faire des mondanités à l’Auditorium, ou de regarder BFM et ses atrocités, si vous aimez le jazz allez l’écouter, sinon à Bordeaux il disparaîtra dans l’indifférence générale et ce sera trop tard pour le regretter. Et pas besoin d’attendre une fois de plus les Américains pour le sauver.

Olivier Gatto band – guest star Kenny Rampton

Wow ! This sounds appealing… Tonight’s bill at the Comptoir Éphémère jazz club in Bordeaux, France, touts a one-night performance, « The Great Meeting ». Back in the 1980s, world-famous New York musicians played from time to time at venues like the Alligator’s or Chaski’s. Among those outstanding performers quite a few were flown in at the request of Olivier Gatto –most of them had been fellow-students of his at the Berklee College of Music. Even though, as a staunch Juventus fan, he supports an Italian football club, you might consider Olivier local. Thirty-odd years later he has done it again, organizing this reunion with two members of the Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra, conducted by Wynton Marsalis. They happened to be playing at Bordeaux’s Auditorium, a concert-hall, the night before. The lineup looks like a gathering of fine soloists.
By the way, you get to hear some very good stuff at Bordeaux’s Auditorium, not least top-class jazz, yet this goes on in hush-hush manner. Tickets are dear in many ways, although prices start at €8 ($10). Besides, they’re instantly snapped up by holders of Bordeaux’s season passes. Hardly any advertising, as there is no need for it, no contact whatsoever with Action Jazz –that would be pointless– a smug atmosphere for members of an exclusive club. Allow me to stray from the point with some anecdotal evidence: in 2016 I was fortunate enough to attend one show at Bordeaux’s Auditorium. Stacey Kent gave a single concert backed by the ONBA symphonic orchestra. After the show CDs went like hot cakes. Listeners bought two or three at a time even as they cost €25 each. A dream –or should we say a nightmare– for many deserving local artists who work so hard, yet are left wondering how come this well-to-do audience never shows up on other occasions…
Unfortunately, one of the two guest stars invited on this occasion, trombonist Vincent Gardner, had to cancel his appearance for family reasons. This offered Sébastien Iep Arruti, our local trombone hero, an opportunity to shine. Given advance notice at 11:44 a.m. that same day, he picked up the challenge and lived up to it. Luckily Kenny Rampton is there indeed, as the audience will soon realize. His pedigree includes the Ray Charles Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, Bebo Valdez’s Havana All Stars, Christian Mc Bride… Kenny has been here before, he played in and around Bordeaux some three decades ago with Olivier Gatto and drummer Philippe Gaubert, who dropped by last night to say hello.
Kenny is there to perform, but before picking his instrument he has a few words to say about another project of his, for he has set up Jazz Outreach Initiative, a non-profit organization in Las Vegas that aims to offer jazz-oriented training and education to young people. Vegas is a long way from Bordeaux but – who knows? – his might inspire similar initiatives revolving around, say, the Afro-Boriken Jazz Association founded by Olivier Gatto and Shekinah Rodz. Just a suggestion. How about jazz musicians adopting a fresh outlook to rejuvenate their audiences ?Enough daydreaming. Olivier hired the best in town for this concert as his American guest(s) will no doubt raise the bar. Doctor Francis Fontès on the piano, Professor Philippe Valentine on the drums, …… the Chair of the Afro-Boriken organization, Shekinah Rodz, on the alto and soprano saxophones, the flute, as well as singing and playing barril bomba along with Master percussionist Frantz Fléreau.
Last but not least, Iep the trombonist –now dubbed Jumping Basque by Olivier on account of his quick response to an unscheduled performance tonight– steps in. Hopefully, considering the JLCO musicians will be staying in Bordeaux during this two-day break from their musical tour, there may be other surprises. I am just teasing, no more surprises. Still, Wynton Marsalis’s chauffeur did make a phone call asking about directions… No regrets, for the lineup at the Comptoir is hot enough as it is.
The Comptoir Éphémère is jam-packed – a phrase that sounds like music to our ears – when the concert begins with « On the Ginza ». Don’t expect a cautious start, Shekinah’s masterly chorus on the alto saxophone opens fire, the next salvo is shot by Kenny taking over.
That is when everyone in the audience starts rolling their eyes and mouths start gaping : although the term « Awesome ! » is overused these days, it is an apt one. What a sound ! How clean that treble is, what exceptional ability to offer instantly smooth nuances followed by ferocious blasts, how fluent, how articulate this improvisation is, voluble, yet never empty ! No muffler, no electronic gear, just real trumpet. Iep confided to me that on hearing Kenny he felt rather apprehensive at picking up the baton. Sébastien, that modesty of yours is no virtue –judging by what we’ve just heard and by the look on Kenny’s face, you’ve been quite up to the job, you did rock it all night long.
One cannot but be amazed at the tightness of those one-night partners, especially when brass instruments play together in impeccable unison and launch into dense conversations.
Witness the dialogue between Shekinah’s flute and Kenny’s trumpet on « Azure » or the long battle of questions and answers between Iep and Kenny, a contest that makes both winners. The rhythm section backs them relentlessly, drummer Philippe Valentine can hardly be seen but his drumming can be heard, changing pace when Francis Fontès shifts into overdrive and doubles up the tempo on « Walkin’ », in effect producing a powerful acceleration.
Kenny Rampton – a really nice guy – then signals Loïc Guenneguez, a young local trumpet-player sitting in the audience, to climb onstage ; he, too, is a bit scared but he grabs the opportunity to play alongside these old-timers ; he knows rising to the standards of his hosts will take a lot of hard work but he is hopeful –and we are confident– that some day he will be counted as one of their peers.
« United », a joyful and amusing theme, gives percussions and piano the opportunity to shine while Shekina plays her soprano, before closing this session with a beautiful love song « Obsesion » which she sings wonderfully. How can so many music-lovers ignore such a talented musician in their backyard? The ballad gradually shifts to a salsa replete with rhythm, thanks to a Frantz Fléreau festival and to burning trumpet soloes by Kenny. Caliente !
Olivier Gatto, sounding particularly inspired tonight, is being let down by the microphone on his double-bass –it decides to go its own way ; with a bit of tinkering the sound is back and Olivier resumes with a vengeance. We’d love an encore but it’s getting close to midnight, when vehicles are known to turn into pumpkins, Olivier points out, hardly suited to carry passengers and their delicate instruments.
This concert was reminiscent of the Golden Age at the Comptoir du Jazz, so instead of favouring Auditorium niceties or watching non-stop daily news on TV, if you do like jazz come and listen to live music, or else its demise in Bordeaux will be met with general indifference or belated sorrow. You’ll miss it when it’s gone. Let’s not wait until Americans come to save us all once again.
